PliesPlies (born Algernod Lanier Washington on July 1, 1976) is a American rapper from Fort Myers, Florida. Plies was originally the performer of the song "I Wanna Love You", but Snoop Dogg and Akon replaced his verses for commercial reasons after his arrest for a shooting (see "Arrest" below). In an interview with Akon on Hot 97, he said that the song was sent for Trick Daddy but somehow ended up in the hands of Plies. It was said that Plies was not the originator of the song and should have never recorded to that beat in the first place. After that song, Plies released his debut single "Shawty" featuring T-Pain. This song immediately began a hit as it topped the Hip Hop charts and became one of the most played songs via radio in the nation. His debut album, The Real Testament, was released August 7, 2007. Plies is currently signed with Atlantic Records, and is working on a second album. Plies graduated from Fort Myers High School and never went to college. Plies continues to state that if it wasn't for the money involved he wouldn't be in this industry. Plies is an extremely closely guarded person, rarely revealing even his full name in interviews. Reasons for this have been debated in various circles. Has a three year old son Niejer Lanier Washington. He is currently dating a young woman by the name of Taija Gray. His debut album, The Real Testament, features guest appearances by Akon, Tank, and T-Pain. The first single, "Shawty" was released July 10, 2007. The track features T-Pain and was produced by Drumma Boy and Ensayne. The second single has been confirmed as "Hypnotized" which features and is produced by Akon. The album will be released in five different versions which will include different bonus features depending on where the buyer purchases the album from. With that said, if the album is purchased at Best Buy the buyer will get three bonus tracks, if purchased from Target this will get an exclusive 30 minute DVD interview, with purchases from Circuit City comes a limited edition Plies t-shirt, purchases from Walmart will get a glimpse of what happened on the set of the "Shawty" video and purchasing it digitally from iTunes will get a bonus track. The album was originally titled "The Real Nigga Bible" but was changed to "The Real Testament" for business reasons. An instrumental version of the album was released on iTunes on September 25. The Real Testament sold 96,000 copies in its first week of release, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200.Even with the high number of sales Plies has been put under the category of "Dead Hip-Hop" main criticisms have been that his songs are low in quality lyrical content and have no real meaning or purpose. This is especially prevalent from the "Hip Hop is Dead" movement who think that modern crunk and snap music does not live up to the many great artists of the past. The following week the album dropped seven spots to number nine. In its third week, the album sold 27,000 copies, dropping from number nine to twenty one. The album has sold 320,304 copies to date. Plies mentions that he raps his brothers life in "Most Anticipated". Official Site - MySpace Page - Content written by Wikipedia. |
